When life hands you a Lemon, make Lemonade

lemonadeI recall hearing that statement and initially failing to grasp it’s true meaning.

From what I can gather, it is essentially about making the best of every situation which presents itself.

Some of those situations may be more challenging than others.

It is the adaptation of your approach that determines whether that situation will overshadow you, or you will manage it.

On a daily basis you truly do not know who or what will potentially cause you to feel challenged.

Empowering yourself with the tools to ‘pick your battles’ and let others slide, can be a revolutionary practice in your life.

We can walk through life like it is a battlefield, alert and primed for every attack.

Or we can choose to see the best, see the good, look beyond our initial assumptions.

optimist-cha-chaHaving the latter approach is in essence, making something beautiful and sweet out of something bitter.

Changing that lemon to lemonade.

Like everything, it demands practice and vigilance and occasionally we will stumble at hurdles.

Forming the behavior of making the best out of whatever is there, at any given time, has far reaching consequences.

Perhaps we can decide to see a problem with new eyes, seeing perhaps that problem as an opportunity for growth?

Gaining beauty and pleasure from something which we would have discarded as worthless  previously.

 

The art of gratitude

gratitudeBeing grateful is truly an art and is a honed skill.

What does being grateful truly mean to you, to each one of us?

In my mind being grateful is when, at that time, you are immersed in an absolute state of appreciation.

Truly, we can all be guilty of taking things for granted.

It is only when we are presented with a crisis, health situation or suchlike, that it suddenly dawns on us that what we have, is truly a great deal.

Do we even ponder on what it actually takes for our bodies to run smoothly, every day?

gratitude 4Having a grateful heart and mind absolutely shifts our mindset from one of lack, to one of plenty.

Instead of seeing what we don’t have, whether it is the latest gadget or job, we see all the true abundance that surrounds us.

Starting our days listing all the seemingly small,though in fact great, things we have, creates the prism through which we see that day.

This gift of life is  exactly that, a gift.We are lucky to partake in this life where we have ultimate choice to do as we see fit.

Be grateful for the very breath that supplies all of your organs with the fuel to keep you going.

Life is not there to be taken for granted.

 

The impact of affirmations on my life

gandhi affirmI truly can say, with authority, that doing the practice of affirmations has transformed my life.

This may appear a dramatic statement but it is most unequivocally true.

Initially using positive statements such as- I love and approve of myself, did not come natural to me.

However, the more I affirmed positive statements inwardly, the more I noticed subtle changes.

Changes, not only in how I viewed myself but also in how others around me reacted to me.

My positive perception of myself was now being responded to. Others were reacting to my positivity.

Each one of us, especially those sensitive souls, like myself, are attuned to the nuances of those we engage with.

If someone is energetic and happy, we feed off that and in most cases will react in a positive, energetic way.

If a person is not happy within, it shows in their body language, the words they use, how able they are to give and receive love and compliments.

affirmation treeUsing affirmations,beautiful,uplifting, encouraging and nourishing words has the capability of transforming lives.

Perhaps, growing up, we didn’t receive the encouragement or recognition we so craved or desired.

Doing affirmations gives us that power back.

We then have the capability to carve our thoughts and beliefs about who we are, thus engineering our very promise of the future we wish for.

If you find yourself going through a challenge at work or in your home life, inwardly stating- ‘all is well, everything will work out‘ is in effect being your own best friend at that moment.

Some points to make regarding affirmations is that repetition is the key.

The sentence should  always be stated in a positive statement.

Using carefully constructed words at a given moment,can be profound.

Simple alternatives for Home made healthy drinks and meals

I absolutely understand how time is of the essence and how we want to get the most out of any spare time we have.

We want to get the freshest, tastiest, most nutrient dense foods as quickly as we can.

I am going to share a few of my newly favorite alternatives, which can be done really quickly.

Firstly, a really detoxifying, immune enhancing drink;

infused  fruit bottleIngredients requiredJar nearly full of filtered water

                                        1 organic lemon, peeled and sliced

                                        3-4 slices of root ginger(if possible organic)

                                        3-4 chunks of cucumber

InstructionsFill jar with filtered water.Mix in rest of ingredients. Let marinade for at least 30 minutes.Drink and enjoy

This drink is such a healthy alternative to bottled fruit juice and carries with it great flavor and nutritional punch.

For a healthy alternative to mashed potatoes and canned baked beans, you can do mashed potatoes with mashed avocado.You can even add in a few nuts, such as cashew nuts, which give added Vitamin E, selenium and crunch.

Fresh market fruits and vegetablesYou can mix some beetroot, carrot and onion in the blender and add it as toppings to oatcakes, rice cakes or sweet potato.For added tang you can add the enriching apple cider vinegar.

There are plenty of recipes out there now.

A good thing to consider is adding green leafy vegetables to as many meals as you can.

Include seeds and/or nuts in at least one meal a day. Add in the super  foods, the onions, the cruciferous vegetables, the mushrooms, when you can.

At every meal try to include at least two foods which are going to really boost your nutrient uptake and overall health.

If we try to follow these guidelines we cannot fail to feed our wonderful bodies with the foods from which it can thrive.

 

 

 

Your child within

children runningLately I have been fortunate enough to have had new additions to my extended family.

Witnessing that mother carry that child and see the miracle of his or her’s entry into this world,  it is truly awe inspiring.

As we see the various stages in the child’s development, we observe their behavior, we actually learn powerful lessons.

We learn that life is to be enjoyed. A child sees everything as fresh and new. They value the new experience .

As the years etch away, our eyes can become jaded, causing us to blindly walk through life.

When was the last time  we ran at life? When we allowed ourselves to indulge fully in the state of happiness?

There are times to be serious but seriously those times can be too long for some.

Laughter, joy and happiness are some of the best remedies for every ailment out there.

Let that inner child peek out more, in fact, let them stay a while.

That child we once were, is still within and has a role to play in our current lives as adults.

Healthy early morning practices.

early morning imageI love my sleep and we all can agree that sleep is vital in maintaining optimum health.

For those of us working 9-5, trying to fit in family, commitments etc, optimizing our time is paramount.

I have come to the realization that really, even if you can fit in a little of what you want to do everyday, it counts.

It is said that, it is not what you do once in a while that counts, but what you do, day in, day out.

We need to look at what we need, which activities enhance our well being?

We must look at our physical aspect, our mental aspect and focus also upon reducing stress levels.

Upon wakening you could either do 5-10 minutes of yoga, stretching or rebounding.Dancing would work too.

Next, you could focus upon goals for the day, which then lead to goals for realizing your ideal life.

A positive state of mind creates a positive focused person who radiates energy and enthusiasm.

Listening to affirmations, doing some visualization can have an immeasurable positive impact upon your day.

What a beautiful and empowering statement.

Through encouraging a healthy self image, we can face the world smiling and be true to who we are.

Self love and love to others is crucial in being the best version of yourself.

I can say, without question, the days spent taking time to do these practices are great days. I notice their impact upon my life.

Seeds of change

seedsWe may view seeds as the source of life, from which plants grow.

Do we really consider or know that seeds could provide innumerable benefits to our health also?

When taking an apple, do we discard the seeds? I would advise keeping that seed and chewing it instead.

Apple seeds contain a substance known as Vitamin B17.  This contains four molecules, two of which are cyanide.

Before you gasp in horror, please hear me out.This cyanide quality has been shown to be non toxic to normal cells.

A further discovery highlights that the cyanide is in effect toxic to cancerous cells, a natural chemotherapy perhaps?

Seeds contain Vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids, fibre and various other qualities dependent on type of seed.

Chia seeds have been shown to stabilize blood sugar levels, promote heart health and provide rich amounts of omega 3 fatty acids.

Flax seeds provide rich sources of essential fatty acids which reduce inflammation and contain lignans, these have been linked to being protective against cancers, in particular of the breast.

To get even richer qualities from seeds, you can soak them overnight in filtered water, a process known as sprouting.

Sprouting has been proven to increase the amount of nutrients which are bioavailable.

Feeling unable to speak your truth.

PrintToday I encountered a predicament,perhaps other non meat, non dairy consumers, face.

I spoke out about the perils of consuming dairy and was faced with anger, defensiveness and outrage.

The person in question could not align my story with what they had been fed by the media, throughout their lives.

How could it possibly be, that a substance as pure as milk,could possibly have any negative associations?

Well,  for one,we are the only animal which chooses to take the milk of another animal.

milkMilk is obtained by continually keeping the female cows pregnant.

Milk contains Growth hormones and Pus,does this truly sound appealing, no wonder it is excluded from marketing slogans.

After all, milk is necessary for growing bones, for our calcium,right? Wrong, oh how wrong this is.

Milk contains six times the amount of calcium we need, it actually causes calcium to leach from our bones to deal with the acidity it creates, when consumed.

Magnesium is actually a much more needed mineral and is little heard of.It helps the absorption of calcium and is found in leafy greens.

I know when I first discovered the hidden truths behind the dairy industry, it was as though  from there on in, you had to second guess every scrap of material bundled up by the media.

It truly outrages me that these truths are still not filtering through.

Milk is masqueraded as a health product, when it in effect has been shown to potentially disrupt hormone levels.  This can  lead to Oestrogen dominence, which is a particularly worrying effect.

I say, look into it yourself, delve that little bit deeper.We need to know what the qualities of the food we consume are.

We can no longer trust, nor put our faith in the media, if we ever could.  At one stage even smoking was lauded as healthy.

Embracing Now

How often can we say we are fully, wholeheartedly immersed in that very moment, that second, that activity?

I am fully guilty of this as well by the way.

Having an awareness to bring yourself totally back to the present, has so many benefits.

Instead of missing out on precious words said, potential memories, you get to fully embrace your precious life.

Meditation and mindfulness and the practice of these, cultivates a life of being ‘present in the moment’

Time is so precious, it truly is.

Even immersing in whatever sorrow you have, will help you get through to the other side.
